University of Edinburgh Branch News

Coronavirus update

Essential staff only are now working on-site.

Only staff or students with individual authorisation can access the buildings still ‘open’. Due to the essential nature of the work most of these buildings are in the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine, School of Biological Sciences, Data Centres, and BVS Facilities.

Safe working arrangements for essential staff should now be in place, including a buddy system (lone working is not acceptable) and measures to ensure social distancing. Essential staff have all been issued with a letter to show if stopped by police on their journey to work.

Staff still on-site include those carrying out vital Covid 19 research and work supporting our NHS colleagues, looking after animal welfare, our security and cleaning staff who facilitate these buildings being open, and those who are looking after the welfare of our students still on campus.

But the University is not ‘closed’. Teaching and other services are now being delivered remotely, with a huge number of staff working from home.

Unison is here to support all our members and we urge you to let us know about any concerns you have. You’ll also find advice and resources to help with physical and mental well-being on the website.

We are always proud of the dedication and commitment you have to the work you do, but never more so than in this most challenging of times. As you work to ensure the welfare of others, we hope you and your loved ones stay well. The words are inadequate, but…thank you.
